Installing As A Journal Style
You can use this tutorial for any of the Journal sites [dead,u,live] i'm pretty sure making "styles" in them is virtually the same [since they use the same source code] So I hope this helps~ it's a lot less confusing than the last tutorial! [i think, hee hee]
First Things First.
Make sure you are an "Early Adopter" or a "Paid Account" so you don't have to go through all this stuff and have your layout not be able to work. If so, download your layout. After you have downloaded it, unzip the files. You'll three types of files. Images, HTML, and a TXT file. Since you're installing it into a Journal Client, you only need be concerned with that TXT document.
Upload Your Images
There are images used in making your layout beautiful! You need to upload those ones that came in the ZIP file to a server that allows direct linking! Currently, i don't know of one. Note you can use // Boomspeed.com does not allow the files uploaded there go anywhere but "auction sites" So when they find out you have images uploaded there used for a layout, they'll delete your account.
Change The Code
You can't just upload the images and expect them to magically show up in your layout. Your journal doesn't know where to look for them! [the web is a big place.] So you need to tell them.
open your text file and look for the filenames of the images you just uploaded. [you can find it easily by opening your file in Notepad, and hitting "Ctrl + F" then type in the filename, and it will automatically highlight that place in all the code.] You need to change "bg.jpg" to "http://liquid2k.com/yourusername/bg.jpg" for it to work. You have to change one little bit of code for each image you uploaded.
it's really not that difficult.
Add in the Extras
Depending on what layout you chose, you may or may not have extra sidecolumns/iframes for nifty information about yourself. If you do, you should fill all the information now so you can just copy and paste the layout later. [there should be a spot in the code that says "place sidecolumn here" or whatnot. it jumps out at you, really.]
Once you've added in all your extra information, you're set and ready to install!!
Log in To Edit A Style
This is where we get a bit more complicated.
First off, you need to login to Your Journal Server.
Click on "Modify Journal"
Once you confirm your identity, you'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the new page, and there should be a slightly large blank text box.
Right above it, in the paragraph [or two above it] explaining what that box is, There should be a link to "Create a Style" or "Make my own Style"
Click on that.
It will take you to a screen where there is four dotties you have to click :D [i'm so technical.]
Click on "Most Recent Entries" [or first dottie :D]
In the Drop Down Box below it, click on "Tabular Indent"
MAKE SURE IT IS TABULAR INDENT PEOPLE!
Then go down to the bottom and hit "Create"
It will take you to a confirmation screen, click "Edit Style"
[if you did this wrong, all the text boxes on the next page will be blank. if they are, please hit your back button and make sure you select "Tabular Indent" in the drop down box below your dottie!]
Now, once we're into the style editing system, scroll down to the very bottom.
You will see the largest text box on the page filled with code.
DELETE ALL THE CODE IN THE BOX.
Paste your TXT file into that box.
replace the %%entries%% with %%events%%
Select "Save Style"
The Battle is not Over
Once you have saved and previewed your new "style" you need to set it so it registers on your journal. [You also have the option to make it a "public" style, but i wouldn't do that, because then everyone would steal your bandiwith by using your layout! and sidecolumn too, hehe]
So, I want you to click on "Modify Journal" again.
Then, you're looking at the top of that page. See where you have the four drop down boxes? Click on the top one. See? Your new style is there! Select that and hit "Save Changes" and your new style/layout should be on your journal! :D
It's Pretty Simple
So it's over. You bit the bullet, created a style and have your own layout! Great! If you really get into it, you can go back and edit that style and change the way your entries and such appear~ but i don't reccomend that for HTML beginners, because you might screw up and have to delete and recreate your style ^^;;
I hope this helped, Questions can be directed at me [see the FAQ] and Good Luck!
